Poland synagogue attacked by Molotov cocktails amid surge in antisemitism

Warsaw’s foremost synagogue, Nożyk Synagogue, wasattacked Wednesday with three firebombs, often known as Molotov cocktails, native media reported. A 16-year-old suspect was arrested Thursday morning in reference to the assault.

The assault on Nożyk Synagogue occurred early Wednesday morning, at round 1 A.M. Michael Schudrich, Poland’s American-born Chief Rabbi, reported minimal injury and no accidents. The Nożyk synagogue is the one synagogue within the central European nation’s capital to have survived the Holocaust. Yearly, it’s visited by hundreds of Jews touring Poland.

Within the days following the incident, a number of political leaders, together with Polish President Andrzej Duda, have made publicstatements condemning the assault. The ambassadors of the U.S. and Israel (Mark Brzezinski and Yacov Livne, respectively), gathered on the website along with Jewish leaders and Polish authorities officers in a present of solidarity with Poland’s Jewish neighborhood.

“I condemn in solidarity the shameful assault on the Nożyk Synagogue in Warsaw,” Ambassador Brzezinski shared on X (previously Twitter). “There isn’t any place for anti-Semitism and hatred, neither in Poland nor wherever else on this planet.”

Echoing Brzezinski’s phrases, Israeli Ambassador Livne and the Israeli embassy launched a statement to X, saying,“Outrageous Antisemitic assaults corresponding to this cannot be tolerated as we speak. The perpetrators should be discovered and punished.” Persevering with on, Livne wrote that he visited the synagogue, supported the Polish Jewish neighborhood and thanked Polish authorities for condemning the assault.

The assault on the Nożyk synagogue is the newest in a collection of assaults towards Jewish targets, which have risen globally for the reason that begin of the Israel-Hamas struggle in Gaza in October.
