Former Colorado paramedic sentenced to work release instead of prison for negligent homicide of Elijah McClain

Colorado’s Lawyer Normal announced that former paramedic Jeremy Cooper was sentenced state courtroom on Friday to 4 years probation, 14 months of labor launch and 100 hours of group service. A jury convicted him of negligent murder of Elijah McClain final December.

McClain, a 23-year-old Black man, was stopped and positioned in a neck maintain by cops in Aurora, Colorado in August 2019. Cooper and his colleague then injected McClain with ketamine to sedate him. McClain went into cardiac arrest because of this and later died within the hospital.

Native prosecutors initially refused to cost the officers, which prompted Colorado Governor Jared Polis to order the state’s legal professional basic to investigate McClain’s dying. A separate investigation found that the officers had no authorized foundation to cease and maintain McClain. The officers and paramedics have been indicted in September 2021. One officer was convicted of negligent murder; two others have been acquitted. Each paramedics have been convicted of negligent murder; Cooper’s colleague was additionally convicted of assault.

Colorado Lawyer Normal Phil Weiser responded:

With this sentence, we now have accountability for an additional defendant who did not act the best way the regulation requires, and now we have a measure of justice for Elijah McClain, his household, and family members. … There have been many issues that the officers and paramedics may have performed the evening of August 24, 2019 to stop this lethal encounter.

And final November, a police officer pleaded guilty to extreme power for hitting a motorist with a baton.
