US Navy SEALs boarded a vessel and seized Iranian-manufactured missile elements destined for Houthi rebel forces in Yemen throughout a flag verification mission within the Arabian Sea close to the coast of Somalia, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) introduced Tuesday, claiming the elements had been being transported in violation of a UN Safety Council arms embargo.
The operation, supported by helicopters and unmanned aerial automobiles (UAVs), led to the confiscation of superior weaponry, together with elements for medium-range ballistic missiles and anti-ship cruise missiles.
The ship’s crew, consisting of 14 members, was detained, and the vessel, deemed unsafe, was sunk by US Navy forces. CENTCOM stated that the disposition of the crew “is being decided by worldwide regulation.” Two US Navy SEALs concerned within the mission had been reported lacking at sea. An search operation is underway.
“It’s clear that Iran continues cargo of superior deadly support to the Houthis. That is yet one more instance of how Iran actively sows instability all through the area in direct violation of UN Safety Decision 2216 and worldwide regulation,” CENTCOM commander Common Michael Erik Kurilla stated. He continued, emphasised the operation’s significance in countering Iran’s efforts to destabilize the area, “We’ll proceed to work with regional and worldwide companions to show and interdict these efforts, and in the end to re-establish freedom of navigation.”
The interdiction is a part of ongoing efforts to implement UN Safety Council (UNSC) resolutions, together with 2015’s UNSC Resolution 2216, that are geared toward halting the stream of weapons to the Houthis following the outbreak of the Yemeni Civil Warfare.
Worldwide consideration towards the Houthis has elevated for the reason that group started to assault business delivery in November 2023. Simply final week, the US and UK defended retaliatory strikes in opposition to Houthi positions on the UN Safety Council, arguing that they had been in full compliance with worldwide regulation, and the strikes had been vital measures taken in self-defense below Article 51 of the UN Charter.
