The Sri Lanka Navy arrested 22 Indian fishermen on Saturday for alleged unlawful fishing within the island nation’s waters and seized three fishing vessels. The fishermen had been arrested from the North Sea close to Delft Islands throughout a search operation conducted on Saturday evening.

Navy Spokesperson Captain Gayan Wickramasuriya said that the arrested fishermen could be taken to Kankesanturai fishing harbor for additional authorized proceedings. Final week, in one other incident, 4 Indian fishermen had been arrested and their trawler was seized by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly poaching within the island nation’s waters.

Tamil Nadu fisheries officers mentioned the arrested fishermen had been from Rameswaram, Mandapam and Thangachimadam coastal areas in Ramanathapuram district. After the arrests, Tamil Nadu fishermen said they might go on strike in protest.

The problem of the fishermen crossing territorial waters has been a longstanding dispute between India and Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Navy says they’ve arrested 204 fishermen and seized 27 trawlers in 2024 for alleged unlawful fishing, together with this incident. The numbers are nearly 75 p.c of the approximate 240 to 245 held equally in 2023.

The vast majority of the incidents occur within the Palk Strait, a slender strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka’s northern tip, which is a wealthy fishing floor for fishermen from each nations. Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Fisheries has mentioned that the problem of alleged unlawful fishing by Indians could be mentioned with Exterior Affairs Minister of India Dr. S Jaishankar when he visited Sri Lanka on June 20, 2024. This assertion got here in from the Ministry after the arrest of 4 Indian fishermen.
