Senegalese opposition politician charged over remarks against president

Chief of Senegal’s Pastef get together and Yewwi Askan opposition coalition Birame Diop was charged with “acts more likely to compromise the general public peace and offend to the Head of State” earlier this week over his remarks at a July 4 press convention.

Following President Mackey Sall’s announcement that he wouldn’t run for a controversial third time period, Diop in contrast Sall to Ivorian President Alassane Quattara, who re-ran for president after saying he didn’t desire a third time period. Sall mentioned at a press conference: “I warn the following candidates of the APR: Keep away from consuming at his home, keep away from ingesting his water, he’s able to poisoning you and saying: as we not have a candidate, I can be again. And to do it a la Quattara. Beware.”

Shortly after his remarks, Diop made an apology.

Yewwi Askan views his arrest and prices as arbitrary and abusive. The coalition launched a press release in a bid to defend Diop, who they really feel has suffered intolerance and injustice. In keeping with Article 61 of the Senegalese Structure, it’s stipulated that no member of the Nationwide Meeting could also be prosecuted or arrested because of their opinions throughout the train of their capabilities. Moreover, they is probably not arrested with out the authorization of the Nationwide Meeting besides in circumstances of flagrant offenses. Yewwi Askan has due to this fact requested authorities to droop Diop’s prosecution and detention.

Moreover, Yewwi Askan alleged that Diop’s arrest is certainly one of a “lengthy listing of arbitrary arrests and detentions of deputies of this 14th legislature,” all of whom belong to Yewwi Askan.
