A latest report launched by the Philadelphia District Lawyer’s Workplace uncovers ongoing racial disparities within the metropolis’s authorized system, Beatrice Forman reports for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Analyzing over 290,000 prison instances from 2015 to 2022, the report demonstrates that Black people are overrepresented at each stage, together with stops, arrests, and incarceration. Black individuals are 1.5 instances extra more likely to be stopped by police, regardless of contraband being discovered extra usually when looking out white people. Black Philadelphians face increased charges of felony fees, impacting bail, diversion eligibility, and sentencing. The report requires collaboration with group teams and officers to acknowledge structural racism and implement neighborhood enchancment initiatives.
