A police officer with the Oakland PD in California has been charged with perjury and bribery for his function in a homicide trial, CBS News reports.
Officer Phong Tran was indicted on Tuesday for allegedly committing perjury on the stand throughout a 2016 homicide trial and a 2014 preliminary listening to and for bribery of a witness, amongst different prices. The 2 homicide convictions linked to the costs have been vacated in 2022 after an eyewitness retracted their testimony. The witness confessed that they had been paid by Tran to behave as a confidential informant and had not witnessed the homicide.
“Due to [Tran’s] actions, my workplace now has to overview not less than 125 homicide circumstances that Detective Tran investigated to see if now we have wrongfully convicted anybody else,” Alameda County District Legal professional Pamela Worth stated. The Northern California Innocence Undertaking will help with the workplace’s audit of potential impacted circumstances.
A spokesperson for the Oakland Police Officers’ Related rejected the costs towards Tran in an announcement to CBS, and accused the DA’s Workplace of attempting to get convicted murderers out of jail.
