Israel enforces Al Jazeera ban with military raid against West Bank bureau

Israeli troops raided Al Jazeera’s workplaces within the West Financial institution on Sunday and ordered the bureau to close down for 45 days amid a widening crackdown on Al Jazeera that started in Could.

In accordance with Al Jazeera, closely armed and masked Israeli troopers forcefully entered the community’s constructing in Ramallah and handed a 45-day closure order to the West Financial institution bureau chief, Walid al-Omari. In accordance with Al-Omari, the order accused the community of supporting terrorism.

The raid seems to violate the Oslo Accords, which state that inside safety and public order on this space of the West Financial institution is underneath the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Council. The Israeli army’s actions, together with the confiscation of kit and the enforced closure of the workplace, seem to undermine the autonomy established underneath these agreements, successfully disregarding the Palestinian Authority’s jurisdiction in that space.

Journalist Jivara Budeiri reported that the troopers “used tear gasoline within the neighborhood” of the bureau and confiscated their cameras. Budeiri added that there’s a worry that the Israeli army will destroy Al Jazeera’s archives, that are saved throughout the workplace.

In Could, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a ban on Al Jazeera broadcasts, accusing them of instigating and inciting violence within the ongoing warfare in Gaza. A month following the announcement of the ban, the Israeli Minister of Communications announced that it might be prolonged. Minister Shlomo Karhi labelled Al Jazeera a “terrorist channel”, and said that there’s optimism for the “extension of the time restrict established within the legislation authorizing the Minister…to behave towards international broadcasters that hurt the safety of the state”.
