Connecticut state Rep. Maryam Khan was attending an Eid al-Adha prayer service together with her household at Hartford’s XL Middle enviornment on Wendesday when she was approached by a person who adopted and assaulted her. The alleged attacker, Andrey Desmond, was detained by bystanders earlier than being arrested by officers with the Hartford Police Division, Justin Muszynski reports for the Hartford Courant.

Whereas Desmond has not been charged with a hate crime, CAIR-CT Farhan Memon referred to as for an investigation into a possible bias-related motive and condemned the low police presence on the occasion. Based on Memon, members needed to rent two off-duty officers to watch the prayer service at their very own expense. “Different cities and cities in Connecticut have proactively assigned officers to mosques to guard towards such assaults,” Memon mentioned.
