Cambodia government critic arrested for defamation

Ny Nak, an outspoken Cambodian critic who was assaulted alongside together with his spouse by males with batons in 2023, was arrested on expenses of defamation introduced forth by a cupboard minister relating to posts he made on Fb criticizing the Ministry of Agriculture.

Nak had previously served an 18 month jail sentence after publicly criticizing the federal government for its Covid-19 restrictions and was violently attacked in September 2023 by masked males after he issued extra public condemnations of the federal government. These masked assaults have been focused primarily in direction of the members of the opposition, and nobody has but been delivered to justice for this violence. Cambodian Labor Minister Solar Mesa defended the arrest on social media, claiming that whereas Ny Nak had the precise to talk, the federal government additionally had the precise to sue him for “talking with out fact.”

That is the most recent in an alleged crackdown againast authorities dissenters in Cambodia. One other critic of Cambodia’s management, Kem Sokha, was sentenced to 27 years in jail for treason and “conspiring with international powers.” Phil Robertson, Deputy Asia Director at Human Rights Watch (HRW), claimed Tuesday that present Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, whose father Hun Sen’s time as Prime Minister was marred with allegations of silencing dissenters, “is following carefully within the footsteps of his father in limiting the rights to precise opinions, be a part of impartial organizations, and maintain peaceable public protests.”
