Brazil security advisor resigns after leaked footage shows participation in Brazilian capital riots

Brazilian Institutional Safety Bureau government Marcos Goncalves Dias Wednesday resigned following leaked footage of his participation in Brazil’s capital riots. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva advised reporters from Brazil’s O Tempo that Dias left of his personal volition.

On January 8, 2023, supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the Brazilian congressional buildings, Supreme Court docket, and presidential palace. The assault adopted Bolsonaro’s loss to present President Lula within the 2022 election. The assault occurred solely days after Bolsonaro left workplace, with the intention of restoring him to energy.

CNN Brazil aired footage of the assault Tuesday, exhibiting Dias on the scene. The movies confirmed Dias strolling across the Planalto Palace throughout the assault and interacting with the protestors.

Dias responded to the movies saying they had been taken out of context. In an interview with GloboNews, Dias advised reporters he had entered the constructing after the protests started, and was attempting to get them out of the constructing.

Dias’ resignation follows a clean sweep of officers from the Bolsonaro administration. Lula’s workplace additionally says that 81 army personnel, together with some from the Institutional Safety Bureau, are below investigation for participation within the riots.
