Amnesty International calls on Madagascar authorities to release detained MP

Amnesty Worldwide released a press release on Friday calling on the Madagascan authorities to launch member of parliament Marie Jeanne d’Arc Masy Goulamaly, who the group claims was arbitrarily arrested final month.

The human rights group demanded the rapid and unconditional launch of Goulamaly, who was arrested on Could 31 after protesting alleged voting irregularities within the Could 29 legislative elections in Tsihombe.

Amnesty Worldwide Regional Director for East and Southern Africa Tigere Chagutah condemned Goulamaly’s arrest, stating:

It’s a travesty that Malagasy authorities have detained member of parliament, Marie Jeanne d’Arc Masy Goulamaly, for making a grievance concerning the equity of the legislative elections in her district. … Her continued arbitrary detention violates her rights to freedom of expression and affiliation. Authorities should instantly and unconditionally launch Marie Jeanne d’Arc Masy Goulamaly as she is detained solely for peacefully exercising her human rights.
